I am former Assemblyman Matthew Harper. I grew up here in Orange County and attended local public schools. My wife Elizabeth and I are homeowners in Huntington Beach and we both graduated from Huntington Beach High School. After HBHS, I attended Orange Coast College and then transferred to the University of Southern California, where I earned my degree in Public Policy and Management.

 

My qualifications allowed me to successfully serve twelve years on the Huntington Beach Union High School District Board of Trustees and then four years on the Huntington Beach City Council. As Mayor of Huntington Beach, I delivered on campaign promises to complete a skate park, build a new senior center, and repeal several outdated laws. I also fought to defend our beach bonfire rings and celebrated 100 years of surfing in Huntington Beach.

 

In 2014, the year I served as Mayor of Huntington Beach, you first elected me to represent you in the California State Assembly.

 

I have the experience, qualifications, and demonstrated record of responsibility to represent you well.

 

I will support improvements to education. I will support efforts to fight crime. I will be an outspoken defender of Freedom, Liberty, and our Constitution.

 

I signed the Pledge to Protect Proposition 13 and the Pledge to Oppose Tax Increases. I have a record of upholding these promises – I’ve never voted to raise taxes. As your Assemblyman, I consistently earned an “A” rating from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association.

 

The Orange County Register endorsed me as, “an experienced, free-market conservative,” who “understood the crucial issues – budgets, pensions, housing reform, taxes – and had in-depth ideas. His positions are solidly conservative and reflect where the Republican Party used to be.”
